As I walked into my mom's room at the rehab center, Sanford, her husband, asked her, "Do you know who this is?" "This is my son," she said. That was the only sentence she said during my two day visit.
Officially, according to the doctor, she did not have a stroke. However, she can't pick up her right arm, and she is suffering from aphasia. Our brain is like a mirror. If your right side is having problems, it is the left side of your brain which has been affected. Weirnke's area is on the left side which is where our speech and language form. Processing is very difficult for her. Sometimes she has a difficult time decoding information and great difficulty articulating what she wants to say. It is going to take time.
My mom is going to get close to where she was before her "stroke." She is a strong willed woman, and I really believe she wants to get well. With the skills of a speech and physical therapist, and very hard work, she will recover. This is what I am believing.
