Corpus Christi is Latin which means the body of Christ. I spent the past three days in Corpus Christi on a business trip. I have been there many times since I was a boy. However, I really never thought about the name. In 1519, on the Roman Catholic Feast Day of Corpus Christi, Spanish explorer Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda discovered a beautiful bay on what is now the southern coast of Texas. The bay, and the city that later formed, took the name of the feast day celebrating the "Body of Christ."
Have you ever heard the expression, "It's all in the name?" Then imagine this conversation.
"Where do you live?"
"Body of Christ."
Where?
"I live in Body of Christ."
Does anyone else live there?
"Yes, it is a city of over 250,000 residents."
"How long have you lived there?"
You get the idea.
I guess in a sense, followers of Jesus all live in "body of Christ." Or, does "body of Christ" live in us? As Paul said, "The mystery is this, Christ in you!"
