What is the driving force behind the Terry Shiavo controversy? Is it the fact that she does not have a living will? Is it because of political opportunism? No, I believe it is because Terri's husband, Michael, has abandoned his responsibility as her husband years ago. In 1995, he decided to break his vows and begin a new life with another woman. In my opinion, he lost all credibility when he chose to not keep his wedding vows. At that point, in a spiritual sense, he divorced her. His bad behavior is why congress is fighting to keep her alive. However, the parents have always wanted to take care of their daughter. I believe that they should be given that right.
Yes, it is appalling to think that we would allow a person to starve to death in America. Terri is not on life support other than being given sustenance. She is just being given nutrition and water. If she had a living will and asked to eliminate all life support, including food and water, then this would be a different matter. There is no such document.
It is time for those who are pro-life, to really be pro-life. Life for the unborn, as well as the children living in poverty. Life for the disabled, as well as life for the drug-addicted homeless person. My pray is that as a nation, we will eliminate the inconsistencies and really become "pro-life."
