We spent two days on the beach and then made our way to Ft. Jackson, South Carolina to visit with our soldier. We got there as Matthew was singing the National Anthem with a small choral group. The group also sang "I'm Proud to be an American."
The best part for both Phyllis and I was when Matthew saw each of us and gave us a hug. Phyllis even shed a few tears, which is something she has only done a few times in our 26 years of marriage.
I was so proud of Matthew for hanging in there. Basic Training is one of the toughest things a person can go through in modern times. Everything should get better for him from this point forward. His AIT (advanced individual training) will have both combat and chaplaincy training. His first responsibility will be to protect the Chaplain.
After the program this morning, the soldiers got to spend the day with their families on the base. We visited the Chaplains museum and the Ft. Jackson museum. We had the opportunity to speak to one of the chaplains who will be doing the training. He seemed like an outstanding officer.
Tomorrow after graduation, we get to take Matthew out into Columbia. We will probably go to somewhere like Outback so he can get a steak. He may also come to our room at the Holiday Inn and mellow out for awhile.
By the way, last night we ate at Lady and Sons, which is Paula Deen's restaurant. Of course it was excellent!

Just wanted you to know that we're thinking of you. Hope you're enjoying precious moments together with your soldier. We celebrate his accomplishments and pray that God will use him mightily in His service and also in the service of our country. Love you!
Hey this sounds great...keep us filled in on the rest of your adventure...any pics of the soldier?
