Easy Like Sunday Morning

This morning I was walking in the park and thought about the line in the song, "I'm easy, easy like Sunday morning." Interestingly, this song was sung by the group, "Faith No More." Paradoxically, the song is about a guy who is leaving his girlfriend. However, I think the writer captured the essence of Sunday morning in America.

Regardless of where I have been in the United States, on Sunday morning there seems to be "that peaceful easy feeling," especially before 11:00. One question that has been bouncing around my head is, "Why does it seem that most churches do not have the ebb and flow of a Sunday morning?" What would "an easy like Sunday morning" service be like?

The first thought that comes to mind is peace. A church service should be peaceful, a reverential peace. This may be too much to ask of our charged culture. Much of our church culture is antithetical to peace. It is almost like unless we get really loud, God will not hear us.

Something else about a Sunday morning is that it seems to be the time that most people give up control, at least for awhile. For example, there seems to be a different atmosphere with the Sunday morning crowd at a restaurant. The breakfast crowd is more relaxed than the lunch crowd. The breakfast crowd is drinking coffee, reading their newspapers; the lunch crowd is trying to get through lunch as quickly as possible without having an incident with one of their kids.

Have you ever heard someone say that their church was their ranch or the mountains or beach? I can understand why someone would feel that way. Where do you experience more peace and less control?

Church should be where we connect with the "peace that passes all understanding," and give up our control to God. What has been your church experience? Is it "easy like Sunday morning?"
