Sacred Communications

One of the blessings in my life is communicating with my two older children who are students at Abilene Christian University. Quite often the call concerns money, or the lack of. Because of the computer age, I can go to my account and transfer money into their accounts with one click. However, my favorite calls are when we talk about what is going on in their lives.

Melissa is in Boulder, Colorado this week working with children in an inner city mission. She called and asked what I thought were some good lessons for "at risk kids." Quickly I recommended the story of David and Goliath -- God is greater than our problems. Matthew often calls and we discuss theology. Last semester he took Systematic Theology with Professor Randy Harris (we were at Harding together). He would call and give me the latest insight he learned from Randy.

Sometimes they call and we talk relationships. The father in me gives Melissa a hard time about guys -- like stay away from them. I don't think my advice is being followed. My advice to Matthew is to be patient -- "Let go, and let God."

Michael is still home and we mostly talk sports. He is the least talkative of the group, so I cherish every conversation that I have with him. He is also 16, which may explain our conversations.

Children are a gift from God. I love my children and our sacred conversations.

David,
Hillary (ACU Student) is in Atlanta doing inner city mission work this week. She called me 9 times yesterday, she is the appointed cook last night and tonight for her group. It was cool to hear from her so many times yesterday for recipe, ingredients, bake times, etc.

Today she called twice, they are having Taco Salad tonight and she is on again as chef.

I guess my culinary skills struck a sacred chord, as I am the food expert, and loving it!

Thanks for a great post!

I absolutely love my time with my kids--I now understand that it's more important to me to have time with them, than it is for them to have time with me--so I cherish it all. They can talk about whatever they want--I am thrilled that so much of it is how God is working in their lives!

David,

Like the idea of talk with our kids as "sacred communication." I need to always remember that. My daughter Joy and her hubby have just completed training to be foster parents. She is so excited to give some children the gift of "parents" who love them that she received at 13. We're praying this will be a blessing in all our lives. I'm imagining lots of sacred communication in the weeks and months ahead!
