Fruits? -- Give Me a Break

Senator Catches Heat for 'Fruits' Comment
Monday, January 30, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. Sam Brownback, a potential presidential candidate, said Monday he meant no offense to homosexuals when he used the word "fruits" in a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

In a lengthy profile titled "God's Senator," the magazine quotes the Kansas Republican as criticizing countries like Sweden that have legalized gay marriage.

"You'll know them by their fruits," Brownback said, quoting a biblical passage from Matthew 7:19
.

If there was ever an example of being a "post-Christian culture," this is it. Sen Sam Brownback used a scripture reference that refers to deeds, yet it is being exploited as if he was referring to homosexuals as fruits. Christians should not expect journalists to undertand biblical metaphors. Especially when the metaphor has been used in a different context with the subject matter being discussed.

I may have missed it, but I didn't read any criticism of David Letterman or Jay Leno making jokes about the movie, Brokeback Mountain, a movie depicting two gay cowboys in love with each other. Of course they are comedians, not politicians. It is no secret that Sen. Brownback believes that homosexuality is an immoral lifestyle. Also, his perception of Sweden is that it has been spiraling down because of their culture of sexual deviancy. However, I don't think he would reduce himself to the language of Frank on Everybody Loves Raymond.

David,

That is absolutely interesting and hilarious and sad at the same time.

Thanks for posting that.

I'm sorry David, but journalists are every bit as astute with language as Christians (and some of them are Christians no doubt). They understand metaphors, biblical or not. It is reasonable to assume that people would sense a connection between the words "fruits" and "homosexuals" when used in the context expressed by the Senator. gimme a break

Anonymous,

Thank you for your perspective. I don't know enough about the Senator to know if he mean't "fruits" as a double entendre. Maybe I am naive, but I can't imagine it.

Thank you for your perspective, and thank you visiting my blog!
