Melissa, my daughter, is graduating from high school on Saturday night. It doesn't seem that long ago since she was my flower child. She loved to go to the park and pick flowers.
Melissa has been our most emotional child. Probably because she is our only girl. Girls are different than guys. Don't let anyone tell you different! Melissa has always lived on the edge. She "escaped" from us when she was about three at the mall. Before we got our youngest son strapped into the stroller, she vanished. Panic city! As we were searching for her, we saw a security guard leading her back to us. It seemed all so normal to her. She is still trying to escape.
Her next stop is Abilene Christian University this coming fall where she will join her brother Matthew, a junior. She plans to major in psychology with a minor in sociology. Her desire is to be a psychologist and perhaps go into marriage and family therapy for grad school. Melissa's personality is well suited for becoming a therapist.
What is the most impressive about Melissa, is her faith. She loves Jesus. For our children to have a relationship with God has been mine and Phyllis' first priority for our children. This relationship has had a significant effect on the choices Melissa has made in every area of her life, and for that we are very grateful to God.
Michael will be with us for three more years. I still have a lot of football games and wrestling matches to attend. He will be our "only" child. Should be fun!

David,
I cannot imagine being in your shoes and watching your daughter go off to college! My daughter is somehow six even though I think I gave birth to her like two weeks ago.
The analogy about African Americans and Christians both suffering for a lack of good leadership sounds so similar to what my husband says that I thought that he'd made a comment on my blog! (His name is David too.) In fact, my husband wrote a book called "A Season for Justice" that deals with that very topic -- how to win the culture war from a radically different perspective.
Anyway, thanks for the comment and blessings on your new phase of life with Melissa.
