Life Coaching for Resiliency

Coaching is an ongoing relationship which focuses on the client taking action toward the realization of their visions, goals or desires. Coaching uses a process of inquiry and personal discovery to build the client's level of awareness and responsibility, and it provides the client with structure. (Being in Action)

"Do you want to get well?" asked Jesus to the man who was unable to walk by the pool near Bethesda. The man had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. His goal was to get into the pool when the angel stirred the waters so he would be healed. Jesus told him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk!" At once the man picked up his mat and walked! (the complete story is told in John 5:1-15)

The ultimate purpose of this healing was to be a sign to demonstrate the power of God, revealed through Jesus Christ, in order for the unbelievers to believe. However, the record of this healing provides a great lesson in the context of life coaching. Jesus asked a powerful question that went to the heart of the matter. The man's answer revealed that he was stuck in his self pity. Life Coaches ask questions to help their clients get from where they are to where they want to be.

Jesus did not focus on the past, but the present. Life Coaching is about helping clients move forward. Sometimes a person who is being coached needs therapy. Life Coaches are trained not to proceed with coaching when it is obvious that a person needs a skilled therapist to help them work through a painful past. However, sometimes a person needs a gentle nudge. A coach can help you charge your "dead" battery when you left your dome light on. A coach will recommend that the client use the services of a skilled therapist when it is obvious that the problems is the alternator.

Of course, if a person doesn't have a relationship with Jesus, then life coaching or therapy will not get to the heart of the matter. The cliche can not be overstated: "The heart of the matter is the matter of the heart."

Where are you today? Where do you want to be? The difference is the "gap." A Professional Life Coach will help you take action to close the gap. For more information, email me @ corelifecoach@aol.com

By the way, read the story again in John 5. The man never did get into the water. That was not what he really needed.
